Esther is one of two main protagonists of the Mr. Hopp's Playhouse series. She is a minor character in Mr. Hopp's Playhouse, the main protagonist of Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2 and Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 3, and a playable character in Mr. Hopp's Manor Escape. She is the grandmother of Ruby, who gifted her granddaughter with Mr. Hopp as well.

Appearance

In her youth, Esther had brown hair and brown eyes. Additionally, she wore purple pajamas with the same color hairband and white socks. She would return to this appearance during her time in the Underworld.

In her elder years, Esther had gray hair which she kept wrapped up in a bun. She wore a white shirt with a green coat, black pants, and carried with her a walking stick.

In her ascended form, Esther appears as an angelic and powerful being. Most of her looks the same, though her hair and clothes are now white, and her eyes are gold. Both of these could glow very brightly along with her eyes when she was emotionally charged and her body with be enveloped by a sort of electrical energy. Esther also now possessed long brown horns and could grow a pair of large angel wings.

Personality

As a child, Esther was typically quiet and friendly, though she could act quite sardonic when pushed enough. She appeared to have good morals, following the rules in the Blacklands Manor Orphanage but was not above disobeying when necessary. Esther was strong when facing off against the Entity, Isabelle, and the Three Curses, resistant to their manipulation and coercion. She demonstrates a good amount of bravery but also appears fearful, often scared of and or startled by their presence and attacks. She initially denied any of them to be real, but soon realized this was not the case. Esther also appeared to be very resourceful, able to devise clever solutions to her problems.

After her previous experiences with the Entity and his subordinates, Esther had apparently grown more courageous against their machinations. She showed little to no fear whenever any of them made their presence known and fought them with great prowess.

History

Background

Esther was the daughter of a man named Arthur and a woman named Faith. Prior to her birth in 1940, Faith would have nightmares of being haunted by the Entity and soon be contacted by the Above, learning her child would be in grave danger. Faith would pass away after giving birth to Esther before Arthur eventually decide to hand her over to the Blackland Manor Orphanage in the United Kingdom. For some time of her life, Esther remained at Blackland Manor Orphanage and grew up there without the knowledge of her parents.

Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2

At some point, Esther started to repeatedly have hellish nightmares every time she went to sleep. Soon after in 1952, she received, via donation, a stuffed rabbit which she named Mr. Hopp. Esther's friends, Molly and Isaac, had also received stuffed animals, which they named Miss Bo and Mr. Stripes. Shortly after receiving the stuffed animals, strange things started happening around Esther, eventually leading to her friend's disappearance. Esther pressed on, facing off against all sorts of challenges and horrors, including the stuffed animals, which were in actuality evil creations known as the Three Curses and who were under the control of a ruthless, figure known as the Entity and its vile cohort, Isabelle. However, after collecting a series of mysterious medallions, Esther is brought to the villain's domain, the Underworld, where she gains a necklace able to repel the Entity, Isabelle, and their machinations. Esther uses this power to defeat a three-headed monster comprised of the Three Curses and subsequently, she defeats the Entity and Isabelle. After returning to the human world, her friends returned and she went back to her normal life, albeit still possessing the necklace.

Later Years

After the events that took place in the orphanage, Esther had moved on and forgotten about the Mr. Hopp[1]. It is possible that Esther was adopted, but her foster parents didn't even care for her. Esther would go on to have a daughter named Jenna who would, in turn, have a daughter named Ruby, which was born in 2009. Esther would make all sorts of clothes and toys for her granddaughter.

With the power of the Six, Esther kept the Entity and his subordinates trapped in the Underworld. However, sixty-six years later, on september 12, 2018, Esther would grow too old and weak of body which allowed all of them to escape. The Entity, vengeful from his past defeat, would capture Esther and take control of her in order to use her to get her family. During this time, Esther would start to feel ill and act strangely. Her house was messy and she refused to clean herself. Esther would also be lost in thought/staring at a wall, requiring a strong shaking to be awoken from. Neighbors of Esther would hear her screaming at night and because of this, on september 15, 2018 she was sent to the hospital. When her family came to visit her in the hospital on september 17, 2018, Esther under the influence of the Entity, gave Ruby Mr. Hopp. Shortly after, on September 19, 2018, Esther would apparently pass away suddenly in the hospital before doctors diagnose any problem. Though in actuality, Esther had been taken down to the Underworld by the Entity and imprisoned there.

Ruby will find several tapes in her house with information on Esther. Near the end of the game, Mr. Hopp will use a what was supposedly an apparition of Esther to lure Ruby in before chasing her.

Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 3

On october 18, 2019, Esther would be found by her granddaughter shortly after she had arrived in the Underworld. Ruby would find her unconscious and bound by strange, vine-like creations. With a little bit of problem-solving, Ruby would free Esther and the two would traverse the Underworld together, pressing through the Entity and his many monstrosities. Eventually, Esther and Ruby succeed in collecting most of the Six but are separated. When Esther finds Ruby again, she discovers with the last of the medallions, unfortunately Ruby has been manipulated by the Entity who told her that it was Esther's fault that she had been given Mr. Hopp in the first place. Esther is restrained and attempts to explain her actions, truthfully saying that the Entity was controlling her at the time. Two different endings can occur based on the player's performance in-game.

In the Bad Ending, Ruby will do nothing and watch as the Entity uses his power to annihilate Esther before being sent back home with no family. In the Good Ending, however, Ruby will believe Esther's words and toss her the final medallion. The Entity will viciously attack Ruby for this change of heart and Esther will become enraged by this, taking on an angelic form and commencing a battle with the Entity. Esther is able to triumph over the Entity and heals Ruby's wounds. Esther will have one last touching moment with her granddaughter before revealing that she intends to stay in the Underworld, saying that with The Entity gone, the place needed a new ruler and keep its many souls in check. Even so, she tells Ruby that her parents have returned as well and that she will always watch over her. Ruby returns home and meanwhile, Esther has now usurped the Entity and proceeds to face off with the many restless souls in the Underworld.
