Mr. Hopp's Playhouse Wiki

GIVE YOURSELF TO US.

— A phrase often repeated by the Entity.
You cannot escape this. This is not the end. I will come back. And you will play with us. I will stitch you two back together. So I can rip you apart all over again!

— The Entity in the trailer of Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 3.

Daerok the Devourer, commonly known as The Entity is the overarching antagonist of the Mr. Hopp's Playhouse series. This mysterious creature serves as the ruler of the Underworld and the master of the Three Curses, Isabelle and the Shadow Creatures.

Appearance

The Entity is a large shadowy deity possessing dark purple light & yellow eyes like those of his subordinates (in their monster forms at least). His head resembles that of a Satan-like being.

Like virtually all the monsters in-game, the Entity possesses the ability to shapeshift, changing his form into all sorts of monstrous creatures.

In the third game he has a more physical appearance and his face resembles more that of a goat.

Personality

The Entity is a powerful and evil godlike being, obsessed with spreading corruption and misery. His destructive nature is the reason he was banished from the Above. He is highly manipulative, using false promises to lure others into serving him. He convinces Isabelle with offers of luxury and comfort, and even manages to briefly turn Ruby against her grandmother. He treats others like pawns and shows no mercy to his own minions when they fail him.

He is also sadistic and childish, finding amusement in the suffering he causes. His decision to have his strongest followers possess toys adds to this twisted playfulness. The Entity becomes fixated on Esther, targeting her dreams in an attempt to break her down and recruit her. As she resists, his obsession grows stronger. He kidnaps her friends, attempts to kill them, and in the true ending, transforms into the Amalgamation in one final effort to destroy her.

His persistence, while dangerous, often leads to reckless decisions. He becomes so focused on his goal that he begins to underestimate others.

On top of all this, the Entity is extremely vengeful. After Esther defeats and seals him away, he shifts his hatred toward her family, determined to get revenge no matter the cost.

History

Background

Some time ago, The Entity used to be the Guardian of Hope before being banished from the Above due to wrongdoing and corruption, and sent into the Underworld.

Following this, the Entity started harvesting the souls of the living to corrupt and feast upon them and stole The Six medallions that kept balance between the realms and create Mr. Hopp, Miss Bo and Mr. Stripes, who would help him in harvest.

In ancient times, During one of his harvests he stumbled across a girl named Isabelle, who was "a young, troubled spirit with hatred in her heart". The Entity offered her to join him in exchange of comforts and luxuries beyond her imagination. Isabelle agreed, and so the Entity gave her the Six, which she presumably used to commit evil deeds (among which the murder of her own mother). This lead to her execution for witchcraft via being burn alive, but the Entity "saved" her by turning her into a being like himself and also had his servants possess her toys.

The Entity continued his reign of terror, preying upon the young using terror and having many children own Mr. Hopp, until in the 1940's he started tormenting with nightmares a pregnant woman named Faith. He later became obsessed with the latter's daughter (Esther) due to how pure her soul was.

Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2

In 1952, The Entity's next target would be girl known as Esther whom he would have his eyes on even before her birth. The Entity and his subordinates sought to claim or recruit Esther in some way[2] and the Three Curses along with Isabelle were sent to the Blacklands Manor Ophanage, Esther’s place of residence at the time. Unwilling to let Esther escape as what had happened before with one other soul, the Entity grew reckless in his pursuit of her.

The Entity serves as the main antagonist of Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2. His main focus was Esther, as he repeatedly haunted her within in her dreams, even outside of them. In the "Bad Ending" of the game, the Entity will chase Esther and ends up seemingly claiming her.

In the True Ending, however, Esther was able to obtain the Six and arrives in Underworld. She used the medallion's power to defeat the Three Curses and Isabelle. She triumphed over the Entity and leaves him and his subordinates trapped in their own domain. However, as time passed, Esther grew older and weaker in body until she was no longer able to keep the Entity at bay.

Between Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 2 and Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 1

Once Esther becomes too old to stop him on September 12, 2018, the Entity returns, taking back the Six and controlling Esther (presumably becoming the reason of her decaying mental health), and on September 17 forcing her to give Mr. Hopp to her granddaughter Ruby to move his revenge onto Esther's family, leading to the events of the original Mr. Hopp's Playhouse.

After Esther died on September 19, the Entity trapped Esther's soul into the Underworld, even going as a far as building a replica of her house as a strong reminder that she couldn't ever be freed.

Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 3

On October 18, 2019, six months after the events of the first game, the Entity sends Mr. Hopp to take Ruby and bring her into the Underworld.

After Ruby manages to free Esther, the Entity orders Isabelle to stop the two of them.

Once Esther and Ruby get past the Jester, the Entity captures Ruby and brings her to himself. The Entity proceeds to try and convince Ruby that Esther's the true villain and that he's merely a victim; while Ruby at first doesn't believe him, he does end up convincing her when he asks her why Esther gave Ruby Mr. Hopp if she cared so much about her.

After the Three Curses all fail to get rid of Esther, the Entity decides to take the matter into his own hands. Once Esther reaches him, the Entity has a pair of shadow vines hold her still as he reveals that Ruby has decided to become his subordinate, and that he's given her the last of the Six, before charging up his mouth orbs to kill Esther once and for all.

The Entity's ultimate fate depends on the ending obtained:

Bad Ending

If all the gems haven't been collected throughout the game, the Entity kills Esther as Ruby is teleported back home by her medallion.

Good Ending

If all the gems have been collected throughout the game, Ruby turns against the Entity at the last second and tosses her medallion at Esther. For her betrayal, the Entity attacks her, wounding and knocking her out.

As he prepares to kill Esther once and for all, the latter uses the power of the Six to ascend, starting a fierce battle against the Entity and finally destroyed him for good.

Mr. Hopp's Playhouse: The Toybox

Some time after The Entity's defeat, Isabelle, vengeful against Esther, would start planning a ritual to revive The Entity in a more powerful state. To do this, she placed candles in front of his dead body, and uses Emmie, a child from the human world, to perform the ritual. Though Isabelle was destroyed by Esther, the ritual has already been done, as a result, The Entity awakens from the dead, angrily shouting Esther's name.

Powers and Abilities

  • Supernatural Strength - The Entity is shown to be extremely strong, being able to break through a wall.
  • Shapeshifting - The Entity appears to be able to take any form he wishes.
  • Teleportation - The Entity can appear and disappear at will.
  • Dreams Manipulation - The Entity can enter and manipulate people's dreams.
  • Future Knowledge - The Entity appears to have some knowledge regarding future events, at least judging by the fact that in the second game Esther finds herself in a replica of Ruby's house.
  • Umbrakinesis - The Entity can summon obstacles and creatures seemingly from shadows.
  • Near Immortality - The Entity has presumably been around for centuries or even melenia and it seems impossible to kill him through conventional, physical means, but the medallions were able to kill him, showing that he can be killed by supernatural objects stronger than himself.
  • Memory Manipulation - The Entity appears to be able to manipulate people's memories; this seems proven when he attacks Esther in the "Bad Ending" and the latter seemingly forgets about all the horrible things she just went through.
  • Corruption - The Entity appears to be able to turn others into beings like himself, which is best shown with Isabelle.
  • Room Manipulation - The Entity can manipulate the rooms of the place where he is in. This is especially shown in the third game, where he creates a replica of Esther's orphanage in the Underworld.
  • Mouth Orbs - The Entity can shoot orbs from his mouth.
  • Telekinesis - The Entity can lift up certain objects without directly touching them.
  • Energy Pillars - The Entity can summon pillars made out of energy.
  • Light Orbs - The Entity can generate orbs seemingly made out of light.
  • Age changing - The Entity changed Esther’s age upon bringing her to the Underworld. It seems that the Entity can change appearance and physical strength by changing a person’s age, but he seemingly can't change their personality.
  • Spiritual Watching - The Entity can watch souls and see through their perspective, as showcased in Mr. Hopp's Playhouse 3.
  • Vision manipulation - Shown by how the Entity showed Esther visions.
  • Hearing manipulation - Shown by how the Entity managed to make Esther hear whispers from Molly and Isaac to help them but no one else could hear it.

Your journey through our domain ends here!

Ruby: Please don't hurt me!
The Entity: You must be Ruby, a fitting name for such a valuable soul. I would not dare hurt you.
Ruby: You're... the Entity... what do you want from me?
The Entity: Only your safety young Ruby, as well as my own from that grandmother of yours.
Ruby: Nana Esther? But she protects me.
The Entity: Young Ruby, she is not what she seems. Some time ago, she stole my medallions and imprisoned me here.
Ruby: Because you're evil. She saved us!
The Entity: We are cursed, forsaken, not evil... and this curse is a burden we must take to help unfortunate souls cross over to the other side. The Six make our suffering more bearable, they belong to me and Esther is nothing more than a malicious thief. She will hurt you too young Ruby.
Ruby: I don't believe you, you're lying!
The Entity: Is that so? Tell me, if she cared for you so deeply, why would she give you a toy that has taken everything from you? Your parents are gone, your friends have abandoned you and now you're all the way down here in this dark abyss.
Ruby: But... she...
The Entity: Don't you see? Esther thinks nothing of you, she has lied to you and is now using you to steal what is rightfully mine... help me find her and I will give you everything.

— The Entity turning Ruby against Esther.
You have all failed me. I will destroy her myself!

— The Entity after all of the Three Curses have been defeated and the fifth medallion has been obtained.
Esther: Where is she?
The Entity: Young Ruby is right here, safe with me.
Esther: Ruby! Are you okay!?
The Entity: Young Ruby has come to her senses and is now my subordinate... she no longer wants anything to do with you.
Ruby: You gave me that toy Nana. You took my life away from me. You're the reason I'm even here!
Esther: Ruby, I would have never given Mr. Hopp to you if I could have helped it... they took control of me... I'm so sorry that I couldn't protect you.
The Entity: Another lie!
Esther: You're still my little gem... right?
The Entity: Enough of this. You will fall here, Esther. (The Entity charges his mouth orbs as Ruby is teleported back to her room by her medallion.)

— The Entity as Esther reaches his lair.
(The scene plays in the exact same way as before, but instead of being teleported away the Ruby tosses her medallion at Esther, causing the Entity to stop and turn to her.)
The Entity: No! You treacherous wretch! (The Entity hits Ruby, wounding her face and knocking her out.)
Esther: Ruby! (Esther uses her medallions to destroy the vines holding her captive before rushing to Ruby.) Ruby, can you hear me?! Say something!
The Entity: Foolish. That compassion you scared ones insist on carrying is what makes you so weak. You both will die here. (Esther suddenly screams as a light covers her. The Entity turns away and his eyes widen as Esther has ascended.)
Esther: Now, it is you who will experience fear.

— Ditto but if all the gems have been collected.
This time, I'll make sure you never come back!

— The Entity as his boss battle starts.
You cannot destroy me... the Underworld must have a ruler!

— The Entity during his boss battle, as well as his last words.

Trivia

  • The Entity can easily be considered the series' equivalent to the Devil due to both sharing the trait of formerly being good before getting banished into a hellish dimension they now rule and becoming the embodiment of evil. Also, the Devil is often depicted as a goat-like figure, which is the form that the Entity takes inspiration from and shown more clearly in Mr. Hopp’s Playhouse 3.
  • The Entity is suspected to be the reason Isabelle was executed by burning, due to him supposedly manipulating her into committing corrupted deeds, such as killing her mother.
  • The Entity's gender is ambiguous. The note in the second game refers to the Entity as an "it", but the Totems in the third game refer to the Entity as a "he" (even calling him "the Dark Lord").
